How to Fix Screen Flickers after macOS 10.15 Catalina Updates

No one deserves the inconvenience of any kind while working on important projects on their Mac, including any screen issue. Many seek solutions to fix screen flickers after upgrade to macOS 10.15 Catalina and a change to another screen doesn’t really end the problem but worsen the pattern of the monitor flicker.

It’s also noteworthy to indicate that for some Mac users the problem comes up when using specific applications, such as Terminal in the process of touching specific keys on the keyboard. For others their monitors display multicolored lines in a random fashion. For a number of MacBook Air users the flicker issue depicts a noise almost black/white background, especially when normal adapter VGA or DVI display has been plugged in. Even in a MacBook Pro of 2018 the screen flickering after updating to Catalina isn’t any different as such.

Even so, it’s not hard to decipher that most of the screen flickers wasn’t report much before the upgrade to the new macOS. While the root cause could be macOS 10.15 Catalina update or another, there’s definitely a way out of this while maintaining your highly popular new Mac operating system.

How to Fix Flickering Screen with macOS 10.15

The following solutions can help you fix the flicker issue. Do try each step until the problem is resolved on your Mac.

Step 1: On Apple menu, go to Restart and restart the device.

Step 2: Update the operating system already on your Mac.

Step 3: Go ahead and reset SMC (System Management Controller). Note that additional steps might be required depending on the type of Mac you’re on.

Step 4: Do reset NVRAM (or PRAM) by activating Mac shut down, starting the Mac and holding Option+ Command+ O+ R simultaneously for a few seconds. The device should appear to be restarting.

Step 5: For MacBook Pro users open System Preferences and go to Energy Saver and look for “Automatic Graphics Switching” option. Uncheck it. Note that Mac Airs might lack this preference.

Step 6: In safe mode, do start the Mac where identifying the problem is much easier. Simply shut down the device and restart immediately while holding down and pressing Shift key where the Apple image should appear. Don’t let the Shift key go yet. The login screen will come up. Let Shift key go and you should be in safe mode. At this stage most people observe that the screen flicker doesn’t occur anymore. If it does, restart the Mac normally without holding down any key. Observe whether the flicker returns. If there’s no longer any flicker the problem has been fixed in safe mode.

Step 7: At times Firefox could be the reason for the screen flickers as observed by some users. Do uninstall Firefox from your app and check whether the problem disappears.

Step 8: If all these steps haven’t yielded any fruit yet go to System Preferences and select Users and Groups and create a new user account. Use the new login to enter your Mac. Check whether the flicker has dissipated. If nothing has happened just delete it (new user account).

In case the problem persists even after trying all these methods you probably have a hardware issue on your Mac that needs to be checked.
